milky

The recent news headlines about giving free milk to the under fives reminded me of a favourite recent acquisition.

A child-size vintage milk bottle, measuring exactly one third of a pint. I didn't buy this to put milk in, but it has plenty of other uses - chunky little vase, pencil pot, container for my dpns, for salad dressing... and so on. Ironically, I loathe milk on its own, and although it was supplied at my primary school, I never drank it. I will happily drink it in coffee and definitely in hot chocolate, but I prefer soya milk in tea. Given the availability and choice, I also prefer my milk straight from the cow - raw and untreated.

So, any other suggested uses for my wee milk bottle?

I've been without email for most of the last week, so haven't had an opportunity yet to respond to all my lovely comments! Thank you, everyone - especially for all those lovely compliments on my post about 'The Deep' - needless to say, I was glued to iplayer, but there wasn't even a tiny glimpse of photos....maybe tomorrow's episode! I know if/when it happens, it will be fleeting...

Also, for those who like a good blackberry and apple pie, my friend Liz left a couple of great tips in the comments of my last post.

Even though school milk (warm to the point of curdling) turns my stomach, I am in love with your little bottle.

Nipper is starting school in September and we were asked if we wanted him to have milk. It reminded me so much of when I was at school, though hopefully they will refridgerate it so it won't be warm! I'd definitely use the bottle for flowers and perhaps for buttons.

Oh I loved my school milk Diana, though knowing me it was probably the cute bottle I was in love with. How's things m'dear? Busy as ever I imagine. Hope we can catch up soon x

I hated school milk! Warm, sickly milk and the overpowering stench of newly varnished floor in the hall - school dinners: the smell of over boiled cabbage and grisly suet meat pudding and bland lumpy skin covered custard! Sorry Diana! I hated school with such a vengeance that just that thought of the milk stirred up some unpleasant memories! The bottle is very sweet though but our bottles didn't look like that! x

I always wanted to be the milk monitor so I didn't have to drink the milk - I couldn't stand it! And still can't drink it straight.

I've recently acquired 3 very similar little milk bottles that I have been using (rather obviously) as vases for a single flower.

Oh! I prefer soy milk in tea too .. and loathe cows milk of any description, but I adore cream and cant resist it .. bizarre... I have been glued to The Deep too! I think those submarines could definitely do with a bit of decoration!

Oh I love the little bottle. So perfect! But wouldn't have been so keen on the enforced milk drinking!

At one school I went to we gave a halfpenny (that's how old I am) and the milk was converted into cocoa by the dinner ladies, we ate it with iced buns...it was lovely

I don't like neat milk either, especially warm, and would have only drunk mine at primary under duress. I do like cold milk in milkshakes and iced coffee though. I remember those funny little bottles, with a straw pierced through the lid. x
