leaf patterns

Yesterday's early walk in the woods kept me and my camera happy - and not just taking photos of Walter's muddy nose! The morning sun was filtering through the trees, and as I looked up towards the sky the canopy of beech leaves was illuminated.

I love the way the layers of leaves build up the intensity of colour, depending on the angle of the sunlight. It reminds me of stained glass, and of layers of tissue paper held up to the light.

doodling

I always seem to have a pile of books out from the library - usually a mix of craft, interiors, knitting, novels, gardening/nature, and food. In my latest pile was this book, written by the duo who own this place. One of the things I loved (apart from the inspiring interiors and innovative re-interpretation of reclaimed materials) was the endpapers, which were covered in doodles of everyday household objects, old and new.

They reminded me of a few months back in 2008 when I would doodle for five minutes every night at bedtime. I would dearly love to be able to draw and sketch 'properly' - but what I see in my head is never quite the same as what I produce on the page. Mostly, I was drawing randomly, from an image I was conjuring up - like these cards.

One night I decided to draw 'Pedro', my favourite childhood toy (more on him another time) who now lives in my bedroom. In case you're wondering, he's a donkey. And I like donkeys. The doodle of the little dog in the book reminded me of my own doodles - and how good it is to pick up pen and paper and just have a go, regardless of the outcome.

...reply to blog comments. I've always tried to, but I'm just not managing it at the moment, and I'm letting it go while I keep up with everything else that's going on. I'm feeling such a strong pull to be outside, and away from the computer. It's good to have a break, step outdoors and just breathe. I appreciate everyone who takes the time to visit here - thank you! I'm sure the balance will change again soon.

now, where was I?

Already a week of May has gone by, and I have been distracted by scraping layers of paint off my dilapidated conservatory, and having all the rotten bits cut away and replaced. So not much to tell really, unless you want tales of achey muscles and a sore back! I am rather excited by this little project, as it will give my little house a much-needed face-lift. Next project will be the garden.

I meant to post these photos a little while ago, when the daffodils in the fields were still vibrant and bright instead of withered and brown. They're from a little pack of postcards of etchings of old-fashioned cornish daffodils, and I think they're rather beautiful. They're by local artist Sally Corbet.

Happy happy monday!
